Abstract:
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a critical need for effective treatments for respiratory symptoms and disease progression. This multicenter clinical trial explored the potential benefits of hydrogen/oxygen mixed gas (H2-O2) inhalation in alleviating respiratory symptoms in patients with COVID-19. Conducted across seven hospitals in China from January to March 2020, the study involved patients who presented with dyspnea at admission and enrollment. Due to the urgent nature of the pandemic, patients were non-randomly assigned to either the treatment group, which received H2-O2 inhalation, or the control group, which received standard oxygen therapy. The primary outcome was improvement in disease severity, while secondary outcomes included changes in oxygen saturation and symptom scales. Results indicated that H2-O2 inhalation significantly improved respiratory symptoms, such as dyspnea, cough, chest distress, and chest pain, as early as day two of treatment. The study demonstrated that H2-O2 could reduce inspiratory effort and airway resistance, providing a promising adjunct therapy for managing severe respiratory symptoms in COVID-19 patients. However, limitations due to its open-label design and non-randomized assignment suggest the need for further randomized trials to confirm these findings and optimize treatment protocols.
